Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park is a about 60 ha area of cultural park located in Ungasan, Badung Regency or about 10-15 minutes driving from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. With a future plan of around 120-meter tall and 64-meter width statue of Garuda Wisnu as its main attraction. The name of GWK, coming from three words, such as: “Garuda” means Hindus mythological powerful bird, “Kencana” means vehicle and “Wisnu” is derived from the name of the famous Deity in Hindu, He is worshiped as one of God’s manifestation as protector or preserver, as well as powerful. So, GWK is Garuda bird as the holy vehicle of Wisnu.  GWK Cultural Park boasts one of the largest artistic masterpiece and most astonishing works of arts ever created in Indonesia’s art history, which reflects the strong values of one of Indonesia’s inherited local cultures.

The main attraction of GWK Cultural Park is the gigantic statue of Garuda Wisnu which is intended to be one of the tallest and largest modern day sculptures. Combined with its pedestal, the statue is planned to reach 120 meters in height with wings span 64 meters across.

Finding the perfect location for such a mega-structure project was not an easy task. It took another two years following the initiation of the project’s concept before finding the perfect  spot. It was an abandoned limestone mine at a barren hill in the village called Ungasan. Despite the fact that the area was so wasted and desolated, the founders believe that this area carries a lot of potential that it inspired GWK Foundation to commenced rehabilitate it.

The daunting task of assembling such a sculpture was entrusted to one of Indonesia’s most reputable sculptors, I Nyoman Nuarta, whose fame in art creations started when he won the Presidential Scuplture Competition for Indonesia’s Proclamation of Independence Statue back in 1979. He is responsible to create the large-scaled monument of Garuda Wisnu Kencana, which illustrates God Wisnu sitting on the mythical bird of Garuda. Furthermore, the word Kencana refers to gold layering some core parts of the statue, including the crowns worn by the bird of Garuda and God Wisnu.

From his workshop in Bandung, West Java, Mr. Nuarta designs and carves the statue into several parts, consisting of 24 segments and formed with 754 modules made of copper and brass coated patina acid. The segments are being transported to Bali, until now.

The location of the GWK statue stands on the highest place of Southern Bali. GWK statue is designed to be one of the world’s biggest and highest monumental statues in the world. The monument itself consists of two parts. The main statue, which is made of approximately 3000 tons of copper and several other smaller statues such as the crown and Garuda’s accessories that will be coated with gold mosaic. The second part is a 30,000-square-meter pedestal built on a 10,000 square meter of land. Inside the pedestal will be several facilities such as multifunction ballroom to be utilized for international conference and also some galleries to exhibit the Indonesian cultural art creations.

The statue and its pedestal will be surrounded by more than 60-ha of Cultural Park. Various supporting infrastructures such as the the Wisnu Plaza, Street Theatre, Lotus Pond, Amphitheatre, Street Theatre, Indraloka Garden, Tirta Agung, the GWK signature restaurants such as Jendela Bali and The Beranda, as well as a number of Boutique and Souvenir shops – all are set to be geared up. Bring home impressive moments along, all these await you and your family.

GWK Cultural Park aims to educate, especially the future generations about the importance of preserving and cultivating world’s cultural heritage. Entrance is required for either domestic tourist or foreigner. Rp 100.000 / adult for foreigner and Rp 50.000, for children is half price for each.
